You can't explain or articulate your challenges to yourself or others
ADHD Coaching model

Working to improve your ADHD experience at the points of performance

ADHD means you know what to do but often don’t do it, without understanding why. This often leads to frustration and perceptions of laziness, even within ourselves. We often feel we are not living to our potential nor enjoying the quality of life we feel we should.

We can focus, but we often can't keep that focus for long. We get things done under extreme pressure or draining periods of hyperfocus, wearing ourselves down. Despite this, we’re resilient and highly empathetic, often pleasing others at our own expense.

As an Irish certified ADHD Coach with a personal and professional experience of ADHD, I view ADHD as a performance issue that can be improved. Improved by ramping up your awareness of what ADHD means to you, getting to understand what trips you up and to uncover, know and work to your innate strengths. Ultimately, coming to your own conclusions and then working to build new ways of operating that make sense and work for you.

ADHD doesn't have to be seen as a curse. Coaching changed how I experience ADHD and myself. I believe the right coach can help others get to know themselves and live more comfortably, in a way that makes sense and fits for them.

What is ADHD Coaching?

No two people with ADHD are the same, but the same brain differences are at its core and shape how we each experience life with it. ADHD coaching is a collaborative relationship which helps you understand your unique challenges, your differences in executive functioning and to uncover your potentially hidden strengths.

As a certified ADHD coach with professional training and also a lived experience of operating this way, my coaching practice adopts distinct ADHD coaching skills so that you can develop a much deeper understanding of your challenges so you can work to make improvements in your daily life, such as:

  • Develop your awareness of what ADHD truly is and how it impacts you
  • Improve time management and organisation
  • Enhance focus and productivity, developing new ways to complete tasks.
  • Boost self-esteem and confidence and enhance emotional control
  • Develop effective practical strategies that work for you
  • Goal setting: Achieve professional and personal goals

So whether it's time management, procrastination, emotional regulation, impulse control or another ADHD manifestation, the coaching relationship works to improve how you understand and can better manage your own unique ADHD experience, getting you to develop your own practical life skills and better overall mental health.

The coaching partnership guides and encourages as you in build new effective strategies, such as those that reduce overwhelm, enhance organisation, to give you more control over your life.

This isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about empowering you to act differently and take charge, with a new perspective and confidence, as you are.

What does an ADHD Coach do?

A professional certified ADHD coach who has practical experience and has ADHD-specific training, differs from regular life coaches. Great ADHD coaches can offer transformative coaching to clients, they get your brain-wiring and understand the specific challenges for Adults living with ADHD.

Want to find out more about how I approach ADHD coaching? I'm Gary, an ADHD coach from Ireland who has a lived and now a professional experience of navigating the complexities of ADHD.

I've a dedicated blog post where you can read more on that and learn more about what it is and the process and methodology used.

Is there evidence that ADHD Coaching is effective?

Healthcare experts are increasingly advocating for it as a component of a multifaceted strategy, which could also span medications, counselling, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Working with an ADHD Coach, with specific coach training, means collaborating with a proficient, informed individual mainly to enhance your ADHD-awareness and pinpoint where ADHD is manifesting in your life, leading you to your own conclusions and new ways of acting.

My objective as a professional coach is to gradually manage myself out of your life as you enhance your understanding, boost your self-confidence, knowledge, and apply your own strategies.

ADHD Coaches adopt coaching styles very differently than other life coaches, as this is required, neurotypical solutions don't work with ADHD in the mix.

This enables you to independently initiate actions to enhance your performance according to who you already are, just in better shape to activate to tasks and reflect on the past and future, facilitating a life that fits for you.

Client testimonial

I sought some ADHD coaching with Gary very early in my diagnosis. I found his coaching invaluable to not only come to terms with my diagnosis, but also learning about ADHD as I was not too clued in on the condition just on the symptoms.

‍Being able to come to my own conclusions and being given tools to understand my train of thought for now and going forward has been extremely helpful.

I really felt like he really listened to me and also his follow up information and good sources of further ADHD information were much appreciated. I would not hesitate to highly recommend Gary as an ADHD coach.

How does it work and how can I get started?

How do I get started?

Prior to any formal coaching engagement, I have a 30-minute call with any prospective client, there is no cost to you for this call.

This is to get some initial background, explain the process in more detail, find out what brought you to coaching at this time. It is important that we mutually feel that the process could work.

I will say it on the call with you, but you should be careful with who you select, including myself, and I would encourage you to reach out to at least a couple of other coaches before you commit.

What does each session look like?

The most important aspect of an ADHD coaching session is context and the coach's ability to spot changes, challenge, encourage, probe, and follow the client's progress.

Unlike other forms of coaching, ADHD coaching involves navigating twists and turns, especially as learning progresses. It's essential to meet clients where they are and hold the space for them.

Sometimes, clients may identify diversions as deliberate avoidance exercises, gaining this knowledge in a non-judgemental way through coaching. This insight can help them get back on task or start to realise that following an alternative path may bring them closer to their true goals.

I can attest that my own life and coaching goals changed significantly after building self-awareness of ADHD and reflecting on its impact on my career choices. In the first couple of sessions, I will work with you to understand your challenges, how ADHD manifests for you, and what you want to achieve through coaching.

While there is structure, it is flexible and tailored to the unique ways ADHD affects executive functions—the conductors that allow humans to self-regulate. My training equips me to deal with these challenges and help you gain better awareness.

Each session is one hour long and ideally includes specific goals to be completed between sessions.

As someone with ADHD, I understand that you may get derailed for various reasons. There will be no judgement if you don't complete the work; instead, it can be a valuable time to reflect on why not.

Where and when do the sessions happen?

At this time, all sessions will be conducted online, ideally one week apart from each other.

It's important that you spend time following sessions to reflect, plan and undertake any actions you had hoped to achieve for the week.

I am from Dublin, Ireland but am currently living in Barcelona and am considering in-person options here, depending on interest and demand.

How long does it take overall, do you offer packages?

While it might be more beneficial for me to sell packages of coaching sessions in advance, I prefer not to do this, though I can upon request. For example, if your employer is paying for your sessions, purchasing a package might be the easiest way to ensure coverage from the outset.

I do ask for a minimum commitment of two sessions at the start, as it’s challenging to make progress and judge any improvements before that point. From the beginning, you will start to gain valuable insights and actionable steps from those first sessions. Before delving deeper into your coaching goals, it's important to build rapport and mutual understanding so I can create a tailored plan for the following sessions.

Depending on your situation and needs, which we can discuss during our introductory call, it typically takes 6-12 sessions to achieve desired outcomes.

That said, everything is contextual and everyone is different, which is why I don't sell packages upfront. Instead, we discuss a plan before making any long-term commitments.

Some coaching calls can be quite ad-hoc, assisting someone with prior coaching experience or who is at a different stage in managing their ADHD and just needs support through a tough couple of weeks at work.

If coaching is not working for me, can I just stop?

Generally yes, I don't want you attending coaching if it's not working for you, the last thing I want to do is make things worse for you.

At the outset of any formal coaching engagement, I will provide you with an agreement which outlines all such details and policies but don't worry, you wont be committed to owing for lots of sessions if unused.

Do I work with all people with ADHD?

No, my only firm rule is that I am not trained nor feel I can offer support to children.

In other instances if I feel another ADHD coach may be more suitable for you given your needs, I'll let you know that and point you to another ADHD coach in my network.

Is ADHD Coaching a replacement for other forms of help, such as Therapy?

No, ADHD coaching is not a replacement for other forms of help like therapy. Instead, it complements other treatments such as medication, therapy, and CBT.

While therapy focuses on emotional and psychological aspects, ADHD coaching addresses the practical challenges and performance issues you struggle with. Think of it as form of ADHD specific skills-training, where you take the lead in changing how you operate by understanding what's going on better and what you can do about it.

Combining different approaches can provide comprehensive support for managing ADHD effectively.
